Antarctica, exploring the white continent

Editorial staff

London, 1893. Professor Sir John Murray gave a lecture at the Royal Geographical Society on the Challenger oceanographic expedition, which sailed in Antarctic waters between 1872 and 1876. In his lecture, Murray proposed the need to organize new expeditions to "resolve outstanding geographical doubts in the South".

That lecture was the beginning of what is now known as the "Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration," which spanned from 1897 to 1922. During those 25 years, numerous expeditions and explorers, motivated by a certain adventurous romanticism and patriotism, set out with few resources and many adversities to explore Antarctica and reach the South Pole, a feat achieved by Norwegian Roald Amundsen in 1911.

"Adventure is just a lack of planning."
Roald Amundsen

A century after that golden age of Antarctic exploration, the so-called sixth continent exerts a great attraction for those travelers who see Antarctica as perhaps the most remote and inhospitable destination on the planet. Its glaciers, fjords, and wildlife captivate all those who dare to follow in the footsteps of the great polar explorers.

This is the case for the explorer and writer Patrick Woodhead who, on one of his trips to Antarctica, was caught in a snowstorm and had to spend a few days inside a tent waiting for the storm to subside. Fascinated by the different shades and hues of white in the Antarctic landscape, he decided to create White Desert with his wife, fellow South African polar explorer Robyn Woodhead.

The White Desert camp has 6 double igloos with all amenities.

White Desert is a luxury camp made up of fiberglass igloos that take advantage of natural energy resources such as sunlight and wind to generate heating and hot water in the rooms and common areas.

The icing on the cake of this Antarctic experience is flying to the geographic South Pole where the Amundsen-Scott scientific station is located, named after two explorers who competed to be the first to conquer that part of the planet

It is a sustainable accommodation in the middle of the Antarctic wilderness, located in the Queen Maud Territory, with a total capacity of 12 people. From there, it is possible to discover this remote part of the world, no longer from a ship as is more usual, but from the inside, from the mainland, and through different activities such as an Antarctic emperor penguin safari, a day of caving in ice caves, or the practice of Nordic skiing.

The camp operates during the two months of the austral summer (November and December in the northern hemisphere) and can be dismantled in a short time because it is fixed to the ground with removable anchors, which also results in minimum environmental impact.

  • Antarctica is a polar desert that concentrates 90% of the planet's fresh water.
  • The emperor penguin is the largest penguin and lives in colonies of thousands of individuals.
  • The best time to visit is from December to February. During these months there are 20 hours of sunlight per day and the maximum temperature can reach -1ºC.
  • The starting point to reach White Desert is Cape Town, where a Gulfstream aircraft takes off and lands at Wolf's Fang airstrip in five and a half hours.

The icing on the cake of this Antarctic experience is flying to the Geographic South Pole where the Amundsen-Scott scientific station is located, named after the two explorers that competed to be the first to conquer the South Pole. The Norwegian, Amundsen, arrived first on December 14, 1911.

Less than a month later, the British Robert F. Scott would do it. Upon arrival, a letter from Amundsen was found that read, "Dear Captain Scott, as you will probably be the first to reach this area after us...you can use any of the items left in the store...".
