Hotel Isfjord Radio

Editorial staff

Isfjord Radio is a 1933 weather post and radio station located on the largest of the Svalbard Islands, 1300km from the North Pole. This tower sends a radio signal to the whole island. It was a strategic enclave during the Cold War. A remote place, far from civilization, with no road connection.

Isfjord Radio from 1976 became a vital information beacon when the Svalbard Airport in Longyearbyen was built. The radio station broadcast signals that provided crucial weather information, navigational warnings, and assistance to aircraft with mishaps.

Isfjord Radio, a key station for air communication and safety in the Arctic since 1976. Provides weather information, navigation warnings, and assistance to aircraft

During the winter, it can be reached by dog sled or snowmobile, and in summer, by crossing the Arctic Ocean by boat. This radio station converted into a hotel, surprises people through the contrast between a simple and functional exterior, and a modern and cozy interior, which still has a working sauna that was built for workers in the 50s and has a glass wall overlooking the Arctic Ocean.

It is currently inhabited by eight people and has three houses. To go from one house to another, only 50 meters apart, you must be escorted by an armed guide due to the number of polar bears in Svalbard.
